Google's Android-based laptops are finally real, and they're built around Gemini.

What Google just launched

Googlebook is a new line of premium laptops, built on the Android tech stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, and pre-orders start at $899. Google first announced the platform on May 12, 2026. Pre-orders opened on September 21 at the Google Store, Best Buy, and other select retailers. Devices reach shelves on October 4 in the U.S. and on October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

Hardware and design

The first Googlebooks come from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Every model uses premium materials like aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. You also get touchscreens with up to 2.8K OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, and backlit keyboards.

Processors come from Intel and Qualcomm, including the Intel Core Ultra 5 and Snapdragon X Elite. Google says the dedicated NPUs deliver over 45 TOPS, and battery life goes up to 14 hours. There's also a returning favorite called the Glowbar, a light strip on the outside that glows at startup, sweeps to show your battery level, and animates when you talk to Gemini.

Built to work with your Android phone

Google is pushing the phone connection hard. When you sign in, your phone's settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages move over with you, backed by end-to-end encryption. From there, three features do the heavy lifting:

• Continue On lets you pick up a task from your phone right from the laptop's taskbar.
• Files shows the files and photos on your phone inside the laptop's Files app.
• Cast My Apps streams your phone's apps into a desktop window.

Gemini across the desktop

The laptops are designed for Gemini Intelligence, and the AI shows up in a few specific places. Magic Pointer brings up Gemini when you wiggle your cursor over something on screen. Google says Gemini only acts when you ask, and you can turn it off.

Rambler sits next to the Quick Insert key and turns spoken thoughts into organized writing with headers and checklists, including in multiple languages. Create My Widget builds custom desktop widgets from a plain language description.

Apps, gaming, and developer tools

You get desktop-class Chrome with extensions, plus millions of Android apps from the Play Store, many optimized for large screens and keyboard and mouse input. Google lists Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and CapCut for creative work, and Netflix and HBO Max with offline viewing for entertainment. Every purchase includes a year of GeForce NOW for playing PC games you already own.

Developers get Antigravity, Google's AI agent development platform, along with a full terminal environment. That terminal can run tools like Claude Code or Antigravity CLI.

Security

Googlebook uses the same security architecture as ChromeOS, anchored by Google's Titan hardware root of trust and on-device malware detection. Google also says it's the first laptop with a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor. That hypervisor runs an isolated Linux environment, so you can pull code repositories or run autonomous agents more safely.

What's in the box, so to speak

Every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, which comes with 5TB of cloud storage and higher Gemini limits. You also get 3 months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. Google promises regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years.

Why this matters

Googlebook is Google's clearest attempt yet to make a laptop that treats your Android phone as part of the same system. With five major manufacturers on board, a strong hardware baseline, and a long update promise, it's a serious launch. The real test will be whether the Gemini features prove useful day to day once people get them on their desks in October.
