Is the iPhone 16 Pro Max still good in 2026? What you get and what you miss

The iPhone 18 Pro Max just launched, which makes the 16 Pro Max two generations old. It is still a top phone, and bought the right way, it is one of the best value iPhones you can get.

Yes, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is still good in 2026. It is fast, it runs iOS 27, it supports Apple Intelligence, and its cameras still rank among the best on any phone.

Is it worth buying? Yes, if you buy it used or refurbished at a good price and the battery is healthy. Apple no longer sells it new. Do not pay close to the price of a refurbished 17 Pro Max.

What still feels flagship

The A18 Pro chip is still very fast. Apps, games and 4K video editing all run smoothly, and the 8GB of RAM means it gets the full set of Apple Intelligence features.

The 6.9-inch screen is big, bright and smooth at 120Hz. The always-on display and thin borders still look modern.

The cameras hold up very well. The 48MP main camera is great in any light, the 48MP ultrawide takes detailed macro shots, and the 5x telephoto reaches further than most phones for concerts, sport and pets across the park. It also shoots 4K at 120fps for smooth slow motion.

Battery life was one of its best features at launch. A healthy unit still gets through a long day with ease.

What you miss compared with newer models

The iPhone 17 Pro Max from 2025 has a bigger battery, better cooling with a vapor chamber, a 48MP telephoto and a much better 18MP front camera. It runs cooler when gaming or filming for a long time.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max, announced on September 9, 2026, adds the A20 Pro chip, a main camera with a variable aperture, and Apple’s new C2 modem. It starts at $1,299.

For daily use, like messages, photos, maps, social media and streaming, most people would not feel a big difference between the 16 Pro Max and these newer phones.

Weak spots

It can get warm during long gaming sessions or 4K recording in the sun, and it may dim the screen to cool down. The 17 Pro Max fixed a lot of this.

At 227 g it is heavy, and many people find it tiring to hold with one hand.

The Camera Control button is still hit or miss. Some people love it for launching the camera. Others turn most of its features off.

How long will it get updates?

Apple usually supports iPhones with major iOS updates for six to seven years. A phone from 2024 should get new iOS versions for several more years, and security fixes for even longer. It is a safe phone to keep until at least the end of the decade.

Check the battery before you buy

The battery is the part most likely to have aged. Before you pay, open Settings, Battery, Battery Health and check Maximum Capacity. Above 90 percent is good. Below 85 percent, factor in the cost of a new battery.

The same Battery Health screen also shows the cycle count, which is how many full charges the battery has been through. Under 500 cycles is a good sign on a two year old phone.

Also check that Face ID works, the cameras focus properly, and the phone is not locked to a carrier or an Apple Account.

Who it’s for

Buy it if you find a refurbished or used one with a healthy battery at a price well below the 17 Pro Max.

Skip it if you game or film for long stretches and hate heat, or the price gap to the 17 Pro Max is small.

• iPhone 16 Pro, the same cameras and chip in a smaller, lighter body.
