For most people it is the Air, and it is not close. Here is when the Pro earns its premium.

Why the Air wins for most

The 15-inch M3 Air is fanless, light, lasts a full day, and never feels slow for web, office, code and photo work. It costs hundreds less than the Pro and does 90% of what most people need.

When to get the Pro

Three reasons: sustained multi-core performance that will not throttle (video, large compiles), the 120Hz mini-LED XDR display for HDR work or just smoothness, or the ports, HDMI, SD, three Thunderbolt. If none of those is you, the Air is the smarter buy.

The verdict: Buy the Air unless you specifically need sustained power, the XDR display or the Pro’s ports.

For most people the answer is the Air, and it is not close. The 15-inch M3 Air is fanless, 1.5kg, lasts 15 hours on a charge, and now drives two external displays with the lid shut. For web, office, code and photo work it never feels slow, and it costs $700 less than the Pro. The 14-inch M4 Pro earns its premium only if you need one of three things: sustained multi-core performance that does not throttle, the 120Hz mini-LED XDR display for HDR grading or just for the smoothness, or the port selection (HDMI, SD, three Thunderbolt 5). Video editors, developers compiling large projects and anyone plugging into a studio setup should get the Pro. Everyone else is paying for headroom they will not use.

Apple Silicon is now fast enough that "which year" matters far less than "which tier". The gains stopped being felt The M5 is a fine chip and a poor reason to replace an M4 MacBook Pro. The same was true of M4 over M3, and M3 over M2. Generational gains are real for GPU and AI work and negligible for the writing, coding, spreadsheets and browsing most people actually do. Ask a better question Not "is this year’s model faster" but "do I need Pro or Max, and how much RAM and storage". Buy for the workload, keep the machine five years, and ignore the next three keynotes without guilt. The verdict: The upgrade cycle broke, in a good way. Spec for your work, then stop paying attention.

The verdict: Air if you can, Zenbook if you want Windows value, OmniBook X for battery, IdeaPad if money is tight.

We asked for better cameras. We did not ask for phones that rock on a table like a see-saw. Look at what we are carrying The iPhone 17 Pro has a plateau spanning its top third. The S26 Ultra and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra are worse. Every flagship now ships with a case recommendation effectively baked into the industrial design, because the raw phone will not sit flat. Bigger sensors are real, but there is a limit Larger sensors genuinely take better photos; that trade-off is honest. But there is a point where the tail wags the dog, and a phone that cannot lie flat on a desk without wobbling has passed it. A modest, even bump across the whole back, the direction the iPhone 17 line went, is the sane compromise. The towering islands are not. The verdict: Give us the sensor.
